Start your own money dialogue

April 19, 2011

Today’s money appointment is very simple. I want you to start your very own conversation with money. This is simple yet powerful, and it will help you.

I’m neither loony nor daft. This can be done. And it’s really very simple.

Start with a blank notebook or journal. This will cost you a few dollars. I have found one at Staples that was only $1, including an attached pen. If it’s within your means, I recommend a blank book, truly bound. But don’t feel that you cannot do this because of money. Money is on your side here, waiting to speak with you.

Decide to devote quiet time to this exercise. I recommend that you give yourself 30 minutes of quiet space.

Find a comfortable writing space, with your journal and a pen. Before you begin, take a moment to be fully present. Close your eyes, straighten your spine, and pay attention to your breathing. Then, as you breathe in, say to yourself, “I do not know, but I am ready to learn.” As you breathe out, say to yourself, “I am open and curious.”

Do this “curiosity breathing” at least 3 times or more.

Then open your eyes, pick up your pen, and write something to money. I suggest “Hello money” as an opener, but make it your own. Then let the conversation flow. Whatever money “says”, write it down.

Need some conversation starters? Here are questions that you might ask of money:

What am I doing to push you away?
Was it something I said?
How can I have more of you?
Do you think I’m afraid of you?

You may be surprised at what comes out. Just let the conversation flow. I recommend that you commit to giving this exercise 30 minutes a day for 21 days. Be there with money, and you will find that money is ready and willing to be there with you.
